Toyota Voxy ban: We’ll arrest, prosecute you – Amaliba tells defiant drivers

The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has issued a stern warning to drivers and operators of Toyota Voxy vehicles, stating that anyone defying new directives will face arrest and prosecution.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Amaliba said the Authority is moving from policy discussion to strict enforcement, following recommendations from a technical committee that reviewed the safety of the vehicles.

“We will partner with the Police MTTD and ensure these vehicles are not parked at the stations,” he said, referring to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service.

He added that enforcement teams will be deployed on the roads to monitor compliance, warning that offenders will not be spared. “When we get you on the roads, we will arrest and prosecute you,” he cautioned, highlighting the NRSA’s commitment to enforcing the rules.

The warning follows plans to restrict Toyota Voxy vehicles from long-distance commercial use due to safety concerns raised by the committee’s findings. The report revealed that many of the vehicles in use have undergone extensive structural modifications, including changes to suspension systems and tyres, often by unlicensed operators. These alterations compromise vehicle integrity and increase the risk of mechanical failure.

Mr. Amaliba further explained that the Authority will engage key stakeholders within two weeks before rolling out the enforcement measures. “We will engage relevant stakeholders and transport operators by next week before implementation,” he said.

According to the NRSA, the collaboration with the Police MTTD will be crucial to ensure enforcement is not just announced but effectively carried out, with clear consequences for those who violate the directive.
