Iranian state media outlet Press TV announced on April 8 that Tehran has completely closed the Strait of Hormuz, forcing oil tankers already in the region to turn back.
The closure comes in direct response to intensive Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, which killed more than 110 people and wounded hundreds, according to Lebanese health officials .
The development occurred just hours after a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was meant to take effect.
The agreement, brokered by Pakistan, had included provisions for the guided reopening of the strategic waterway, which carries approximately 20 percent of global oil supply .
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated early Wednesday that the ceasefire deal does not cover fighting against Hezbollah in Lebanon, directly contradicting what Pakistan and other nations had understood as the terms of the agreement .
