President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision was taken in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution after the President received the report of a committee set up under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition of stated misbehaviour brought by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr Daniel Ofori.
The committee, after considering the petition and the evidence, concluded that grounds of stated misbehaviour had been established and recommended Justice Torkonoo’s removal. Under the Constitution, the President is bound to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, on Monday, September 1, 2025.
