The neighbours of a 6-year-old class one pupil at Kotababi in Accra, who is alleged to be suffering abuse from his mother, have appealed to the authorities to rescue the little boy from the parent.
According to the neighbours, the mother of the boy, one Gloria, has been abusing him for about 4 years now.
Georgina Anibongo, who hails from the Upper East Region, and has been a neighbour to the family, told Class News’ Nasaria Abdul Rahman that the mother of the boy was like a sister to her, even before giving birth.
She narrated: “When she came closer to us about 5 years ago, every blessed day whenever the boy does something, she used to cane the boy too much. Even when you go to her and ask her to stop, she’ll insult you".
“So, in the area, nobody wants to talk to her; whenever they see she’s beating the child everybody will move away and go. Because if you go and say stop, she’ll come and insult you and fight you.”
Georgina also indicated that the boy’s inability to speak English is one of the reasons for his mother’s intimidation at home.
“So he has been intimidated, everything you ask him in English, he can’t speak,” the neighbour indicated.
The neighbor disclosed that she was compelled to report the mother to the Police.
“Yesterday, when she did that, I got angry with her and took the boy from her and said I’m going to stay with the boy, that she’ll not see the boy again.
“So, yesterday, I sent the boy to Kotababi Police Station to report and they said I should go to Nima, so I went to Nima to report, because anything can happen at midnight and I’ll be held responsible. So I want you people to help me to collect the child from the mother because she said she’ll kill the boy and she’ll go to jail,” he appealed.
The neighbour wants the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to intervene to save the child before the mother’s actions destroy him.
“If the Minister of Gender will not take care of the child, I’ll take care of the child. I don’t have any problem. Because the way she’s [mother] treating the child is very bad and I want you people to separate the child from the mother,” the neighbor appealed.
She added that since the mother has threatened to kill the child, she could carry out her threats in other ways, through food poisoning for example.
Confirming his mother’s behavior towards him, the little boy noted that she beats him “everyday.”
