The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has placed three pharmacies under immediate temporary suspension from the National Health Insurance Scheme, effective Thursday, May 14, 2026, following the discovery of material irregularities in claims and service transactions.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the NHIA named the affected facilities as Deldem Pharma Limited, located at Iron City in Weija; Paramedica Pharmacy, located at Guggisberg Avenue in Ablekuma; and Desh Chemist, located at Amasaman along Odumase High Street.
The suspensions were triggered by a routine claims verification exercise conducted by the Authority, which identified material irregularities in claims and service transactions associated with the three facilities. The NHIA stated that these irregularities have raised a reasonable suspicion of fraud and abuse under the NHIS Provider Service Agreement.
Implications of the suspension
During the suspension period, the three pharmacies are not permitted to provide services or dispense medicines under the National Health Insurance Scheme. NHIS members who require pharmaceutical services have been advised to seek care from other credentialed NHIS providers nationwide.
The Authority issued a stern warning to all credentialed healthcare providers, stating that it will not tolerate fraudulent or abusive practices that undermine the sustainability of the NHIS and may deprive members of quality healthcare services.
Criminal liability
The NHIA further reminded service providers that a healthcare provider providing services under the National Health Insurance Scheme who defrauds or attempts to defraud the Scheme commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine or a term of imprisonment of not more than ten years, or both.
