A Ugandan woman, Fortunate Kyarikunda, has been sentenced to six years in prison for refusing to marry a businessman who sponsored her education since 2015 and provided her with a booming supermarket business while still in school and built her family a duplex in her village.

The couple began dating in 2015 and had planned to marry in 2018, with the man covering all expenses. However, in 2025 the woman breached their agreement by rejecting his proposal, prompting the man to take legal action.
The Rukungiri District court found the woman guilty after reviewing evidence and sentenced her to seven years in prison.
The evidence presented showed that the man had supported the woman and her family for 11 years, including funding her education until graduation. Is it proper for the court to make such a decision or is it a well deserved judgement by the woman?
