State of Washington sues online platform that allows bets on Iran news

The US state of Washington is suing Kalshi, a crypto-based online platform that lets users bet on the outcome of future events.

Attorney General Nick Brown wrote on X that while the site “tries to deceive governments and consumers by calling itself a ‘prediction market'”, Kalshi is just another form of online gambling.

Kalshi is marketed as a peer-to-peer trading site where users make trades based on the odds of an event coming to pass, like the outcome of an election or a sports event.

The site currently has several open “markets” that let users predict events in Iran. They include the date when users think Washington and Tehran will achieve a nuclear deal, and the date when users think Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s deposed Shah, will return to Iran.

Unlike its rival Polymarket, however, Kalshi steers away from letting users bet on outcomes related to the war itself, such as the date of a possible US ground invasion.

What we know about UN’s role in reopening Strait of Hormuz

The UN has created a new task force, led by top UN logistics official Jorge Moreira da Silva, to help ships safely travel through the Strait of Hormuz.

    Here’s what we know:

    • Da Silva says the focus will be on ships carrying fertilisers and “related raw materials” to help prevent a humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and beyond.
    • Iran’s UN envoy in New York, Ali Bahreini, said on Friday that Tehran had agreed to the UN’s request to help “further expedite the safe passage of humanitarian shipments”.
    • UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that if the initiative succeeds, it could also help “create confidence” from countries in the “diplomatic approach to the conflict and constitute a valuable step towards a wider political settlement”.
    • The UN has experience in this area. For example, it helped broker the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which saw millions of metric tonnes of food shipped out of Ukraine before Russia withdrew its support for the initiative.
    • The task force for the Strait of Hormuz will also include representatives from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dujarric said.

Hezbollah fires surface-to-air missile at Israeli warplane over Beirut

It’s difficult to get concrete information from the Israelis about exactly where they are operating and what they are up to in southern Lebanon. Part of that is operational security, and part of it is due to the military censorship inside Israel.

We can take a bit of a stab at where they are currently operating, based on the location of statements from Hezbollah and where they say they are targeting Israeli troops.

Over the past 24 hours, Hezbollah say they’ve carried out 82 operations against Israeli troops operating inside Lebanon, but also across the border.

That targeting seems to be concentrated in areas where Israelis are trying to advance, starting with the town of Khiam. The Israelis have entered at this point and are seeking to take full control of it.

Hezbollah claims they hit two Israeli tanks a little bit further in around the town of Tyre, which has seen some fierce fighting over the last week.

We’re now seeing that Hezbollah is claiming to be targeting troops a further 5km (3 miles) inside Lebanon in the town of Qantara. We’re also seeing claims of direct clashes on the ground in the town of Miniara.

The noticeable development in Hezbollah’s operations is that they fired a surface-to-air missile at an Israeli warplane that was flying low over Beirut earlier this evening.

That is a significant escalation, not necessarily in terms of Hezbollah’s military capabilities – we’ve known for some time they’ve had this capacity – but that they’ve decided to use these weapons inside the capital.

UN coordinator for Strait of Hormuz says focus will be on shipments of fertilisers

Jorge Moreira da Silva says he will lead a new UN task force aimed at preventing “a massive humanitarian crisis” by ensuring ships carrying fertilisers and “related raw materials” can cross the Strait of Hormuz.

“Disruptions in maritime trade” through the strait “risk creating ripple effects impacting humanitarian needs and agricultural production in the coming months,” da Silva said.

The UN is “standing by to support this lifesaving operation” in order to help countries “in the Middle East and beyond, including in Africa and Asia, import-dependent on fertilisers”, he said.
