FIFA World Cup cancelled fears due to war in the Middle East

Today's headlines are dominated by global tensions and widespread conflict, against a social and political landscape some already consider to be developing into something resembling a world war.

As both significant and smaller-scale conflicts and fully declared wars pepper the globe, analysts have begun to speculate about how major cultural events of the year might be impacted - including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

It marks the first time the United States has hosted the football tournament in 32 years, and just three months before its start, the country finds itself embroiled in some of the largest ongoing conflicts.

The first point to note is that, while the US and Israel are actively engaged in missile exchanges with Iran only yesterday confirmed it would not compete.

Iran's sports minister, Ahmad Donyamal, said in an interview: "Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup.

"In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way."

"In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way."

When questioned about whether Iran should be permitted to play in the tournament, President Donald Trump told Politico: "I really don't care. I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They're running on fumes."

World Cups have been scrapped twice previously owing to conflicts.

Throughout the Second World War, whilst stadiums served as military bases, the 1942 and 1946 competitions - scheduled to take place in either Nazi Germany or Brazil, the two bidding nations - were abandoned.

Following the war's conclusion, arrangements recommenced and FIFA granted the hosting privileges to Brazil - bringing a 12-year break to an end.

Furthermore, individual federations unilaterally boycotting competitions is not without precedent. During the 1950s, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt and Sudan pulled out of the qualifiers over their refusal to face Israel, whilst the entire African continent withdrew from the 1966 Cup after Fifa determined it must compete alongside Asia and Oceania for a solitary qualifying place.

The USSR boycotted the 1974 playoffs following their refusal to face Chile on political grounds, and England held lengthy deliberations in 1982 to circumvent playing Argentina during Falklands War hostilities.

Regarding this year's competition, FIFA released a statement clarifying their stance on whether the matches will proceed.

FIFA's World Cup chief operating officer (COO), Heimo Schirgi stated at the Cup's International Broadcast Centre: "If I had a crystal ball, I could tell you now what is going to happen, but obviously the situation is developing,

"It's changing day by day, and we are monitoring closely. We're working together with all our federal partners and also our international partners in evaluating the situation, and we basically take it day by day, and at some stage, we will have a resolution.

"And the World Cup will go on, obviously, right? The World Cup is too big, and we hope that everyone who has qualified can participate.

"Given the state of the world today, this will be a great opportunity to bring everyone together. For those who have not experienced the World Cup, the World Cup is very special because it's truly global and it brings everybody together. We witnessed that in Qatar, in Russia, everywhere. People were amazed at how international this whole thing is," he added.

Russia is currently banned from international football tournaments since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine's participation in the World Cup is currently unconfirmed - subject to qualification game results due to be decided by the end of March.
