This is the moment an Iranian anchor sobbed on state TV as he announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed Saturday.
“God is great. God is great. With deep sorrow, it is announced to the nation of Iran that Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, was martyred today in a joint criminal attack by the United States and the Zionist regime,” the anchor says, before breaking down.
Others can be heard crying off screen in the studio as the newsreader announces Khamenei’s death to the nation.

On another state channel, IRINN, a stone-faced anchor read a sober statement from the Supreme National Security Council — as verses from the Quran played in the background, according to the BBC.
The security council statement said that Khamenei’s death would spark “an uprising in the fight against the oppressors.”
The TV announcer said that Khamenei’s “long dream of martyrdom became true” — and noted that he died during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Iran’s state news agency claimed that Khamenei was killed while working in his office at his compound.
“To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” the agency said as it announced the supreme leader’s death.
