Woman arrested for operating her own prison

SOUTH AFRICA – A 54-year-old woman from NkowaNkowa in Limpopo has been arrested for operating an illegal “prison” from her home and detaining dozens of men she has accused of violence and unpaid alcohol bills.



According to police reports, the woman who is also a beer bar owner has converted a part of her home into a makeshift detention facility.

She locks up patrons who were either causing violence after drinking or failing to pay their bills.

Authorities say since 2nd December 2025, she has detained at least 36 men, many of whom were held for consuming alcohol at her beer bar without paying while the others were allegedly imprisoned for being abusive toward women when drunk.



The woman reportedly justified her actions as a way of “disciplining” troublesome customers and protecting women at her establishment.



She allegedly kept the men locked up until they sobered up or settled their outstanding debts.

She is expected to face charges related to kidnapping, assault, and operating an unlawful detention facility.

The case has sparked debate in the community, with some residents claiming the woman was trying to restore order in the area, while others insist she took the law into her own hands.

Police have urged tavern owners and community members to report incidents of violence or non-payment to law enforcement instead of resorting to illegal and dangerous measures.

The accused is set to appear in court soon.
