The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the immediate release of the Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, following her arrest during a dawn police operation.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said the IGP has also directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation. Any officers found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.
The Queen Mother was taken into custody after heavily armed police officers stormed her residence at the Abene Palace amid indiscriminate gunfire around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Although the exact motive for the raid remains unclear, the Kwahu Paramount Chief, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, confirmed that several individuals were arrested during the incident. Her absence was only noticed after those arrested had been removed, raising concerns of a possible abduction.
In response, security has been bolstered across the Kwahu Traditional Area to ensure the safety of residents and maintain public calm.
