After Chief's Death, Drastic Crackdown: Smocks Outlawed, Night Biking Banned In Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed a ban on motorbike use after 7:00 p.m. and suspended an ongoing inter-tribal football tournament in response to the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase, in Asewase on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

At an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, July 24, REGSEC announced a series of urgent security measures aimed at curbing further unrest and maintaining public safety.

The four key directives are as follows:

Curfew on Motorbikes: A ban on all motorbike movement after 7:00 p.m., effective immediately and until further notice.
Crackdown on Unroadworthy Bikes: A prohibition on unregistered motorbikes and those without functioning headlights.
Football Tournament Suspended: The suspension of the inter-tribal football competition currently underway.
Smocks Ban for Riders: A ban on motorbike riders wearing smocks, based on intelligence that suspects may be using them to conceal weapons.

To bolster these measures, joint Police and Military patrols have been deployed to identified hotspots across the region.

In a statement signed by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, REGSEC assured the public of the government’s firm commitment to restoring calm and upholding law and order.

“The REGSEC assures the general public of the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order and fostering a peaceful society. All necessary measures are being implemented to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice,” the statement read.

The Council also urged residents to support security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.

The assassination of Chief Azenbge has heightened tensions in the region, prompting REGSEC to reaffirm its readiness to act decisively in service of peace and public safety.
