Philemon Gyapong, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has urged the government to accept their proposed conditions of service immediately, even if the payment of arrears must be delayed.
According to Mr. Gyapong, the association is willing to show flexibility on the timing of financial commitments, provided that the core terms of the agreement are acknowledged and formalized now.
In an interview with Sit-in-Host of Peacefm's "Kokrokoo" Nana Yaw Kesseh , the GRNMA Deputy Spokesperson emphasized that the ongoing strike stems from prolonged delays in negotiations, which have left many health professionals frustrated.
"...we remain committed to providing care but can no longer ignore the unfair treatment and broken promises," he stressed.
He further expressed deep frustration over the government's failure to prioritize the welfare of nurses and midwives in the national budget.
The association has criticized what it calls a longstanding neglect of healthcare professionals, warning that continued inaction could further weaken the country’s already strained health system.
Lastly, Mr Gyapong dismissed claims that the association’s ongoing strike is politically motivated or influenced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
"....this industrial action arises from real and urgent concerns affecting the welfare of nurses and midwives across the country....government should stop attempting to cloth us in political colours, and instead focus on finding lasting solutions to the issues raised," he added.
