Guru declared 2024 UGSRC President against all odds

Hiplife star Guru NKZ has won the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC) presidential race.

With 9,455 votes, representing 50.7%, Maradona Adjei Yeboah (Guru) is UGSRC president-elect and Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah vice president-elect, defeating four other pairs.

In 2023, Guru told CTV he would venture into student leadership on the UG-Legon, Accra, campus. He indicated he was studying Political Science and Information Studies, and, in fact, would take up Law afterwards "if God permits".

He noted to CTV's Class Showbiz panel led by Sammy Flex politics permeated every facet of ordinary life including entertainment and “so I reasoned to put it into practice and see what comes of it”.

Taking up student leadership, the entrepreneur and entertainer added, was to be training wheels for him “to test and see if I can do well in politics”.

The NKZ Music boss explained, also, he enrolled at Ghana's premier university because "they are good" in his fields of interest.

On his campaign, Guru promised to work to reduce student fees, medical examination fees, and digitalise school IDs, among other things.

After an August 11 vetting, however, he was disqualified from the UGSRC presidential race because he was ineligible per the SRC constitution being a nonresident student.

Guru and his team overcame this challenge when the Appeals Board of UG, Legon, Accra, overturned the disqualification.

"On this side, we don't lose [peace/victory and love emojis]," Guru remarked on social media, Sunday, September 15, 2024.

The good news for the Maralit 2024 campaign came after they lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs of UG, and secured an interim injunction effecting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling was made.
