V/R: Ziope Chief calls for support for self-help initiatives to foster community development

The Dufia (Chief) of Ziope in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region, Torgbui Kpordoave Ahiagba IV, has emphasised the importance of community stakeholders rallying behind self-help initiatives aimed at promoting community and socio-economic development.

During a brief ceremony to inaugurate a four-seater water closet (W.C.) toilet in Ziope, and in a speech read on behalf of Torgbui Kpordoave Ahiagba IV by Dumega Richard Afaglo, the Dufia expressed his belief that communities benefit greatly from embarking on self-help projects, regardless of their size, rather than solely relying on central government assistance.

Torgbui Kpordoave Ahiagba IV said: "When we have good health, everything is possible to achieve, and we must rally behind self-help initiatives for community development. I want to urge all community stakeholders to always support initiatives like this, which are meant to benefit us and future generations."

He noted that consultations with the town's Assemblyman revealed the self-help project for sanitation would significantly help the community, as not all homes in Ziope have toilets.

Torgbui Ahiagba IV stressed that taking preventive measures, no matter how small, is more cost-effective than dealing with public health issues such as Cholera, Dysentery, and Typhoid, which may arise due to poor sanitation.

To address this, Torgbui Ahiagba IV explained that designated locations in Ziope town will host the construction of places of convenience, aiming to eliminate open defecation and improve overall sanitation in the area.

The project was commissioned by Queen Mother of Ziope, Mama Ahalexorme III, who also urged residents to support the traditional leadership and local authorities in their efforts to develop Ziope township.

The Assemblyman for Ziope Electoral Area, Philip Azameti, expressed optimism that the initiative would greatly enhance sanitation, as the town currently has only one old public restroom that is insufficient for the growing population.

He commended Torgbui Kpordoave Ahiagba IV for igniting a sense of community spirit, which, in turn, will foster unity and development in Ziope, ensuring that the youth are actively involved in decision-making processes.

Mr Azameti pointed out that the project would create employment opportunities for the town's residents, contributing to improved socio-economic activities.

Residents of Ziope shared their excitement about the project, with Class FM’s Volta Regional Correspondent Kingsley Attitsogbui expressing how it would ensure the cleanliness of the town and enhance the overall well-being of the community.
