Manchester City will be trying to make their first-ever Champions League final when they travel to Paris to take on PSG on Wednesday at 8:00pm (UK time).

City have progressed to their first semi-final in the Pep Guardiola era and will want to go one better and make the showpiece. PSG were last season’s runners-up and having eliminated defending champions Bayern Munich in the last round will be determined to go all the way. And that will start with an impressive home performance against City.

Scoreline prediction: PSG 3-1 Man City

Manchester City are a better side than PSG and will dominate this game from start to finish. However, they can too often be blunted by a stubborn rearguard, much like the kind that PSG used to knock Bayern Munich out. As impressive as City are, they will have no answer to Neymar and Kylian Mbappé on the counter-attack and they’ll suffer for it.

PSG have won five of their last six games, but come into this tie second in Ligue 1. Yes, that’s right. As good as the Parisians have been in Europe, their form back at home has been weak and not only will there be no domestic treble this year (the Coupe de la Ligue ended after last season) but there may not even be a domestic double as Lille have their fate in their own hands and a kind run-in.

Conversely, City are running away with the Premier League and every time you think Manchester United might get their act together and challenge them they just, sort of, don’t. Guardiola’s men most recently clinched their fourth consecutive Carabao Cup with a suffocatingly dominant 1-0 win over Spurs.

PSG are still without Juan Bernat and will be sweating the returns to fitness of Marquinhos, Abdou Diallo and Rafinha. There are also concerns over Mbappé’s health after he limped off at the weekend.

PSG vs Man City predicted XIs:

PSG will want to replicate the game states from the Bayern Munich tie as much as possible, and will thus pick an XI that closely matches the one they used in Germany. Mauricio Pochettino will want his team at full strength, and with doubts over Diallo and Marquinhos’ fitness, he will take no chances and instead start Mitchel Bakker at left-back and Danilo Pereira in midfield.

Colin Dagba’s defensive excellence will have earned him a start in the back-line as well. In midfield, Idrissa Gueye will act as an enforcer next to Marco Verratti, with Leandro Paredes an excellent sub for either man. Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria patrol the flanks, congesting those dangerous passing lanes Man City use, while Neymar and Mbappé will be unleashed to raid forward as they see fit.

Guardiola always throws some unforeseen tactical switch into these kinds of European games so it’s never possible to guess his XI 100% correctly but looking at his XI from the Carabao Cup final, some selections are obvious. Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Rodri all sat the final out (or came off the bench late) and were important against Borussia Dortmund so you can expect them to come into the XI.

John Stones was suspended for the final and Ederson was rested as per Guardiola’s selection policy, so they will both come back in too you’d imagine. Beyond that, it will be much the same with Walker on the right tasked with keeping an eye on PSG’s electric forwards on the break, while Zinchenko facilitates City’s numerical superiority in midfield. Meanwhile, Ruben Dias, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden will remain key players as Pep unleashes City’s passing hurricane onto PSG.
